A review of three species of Hesperonoe (Annelida: Polynoidae) in Asia,with descriptions of two new species and a new record of Hesperonoe hwanghaiensis from Korea

A taxonomic review of three Asian species of Hesperonoe (Annelida: Polynoidae) is presented. Hesperonoe hwanghaiensis Uschakov and Wu, 1959 Uschakov PV, Wu B. 1959. [The polychaete worms of the families Phyllodocidae and Aphroditidae (Polychaeta, errantia) from the Yellow Sea]. Arch Inst Oceanol Sinica. 1:1–40, pls. I–X. (In Chinese and Russian). [Google Scholar] (type locality: Qingdao, China) is redescribed based on five specimens collected from an intertidal site in the Korean coast of the Yellow Sea, as a new record of this species from Korea, which is the only known habitat outside the type locality. Hesperonoe coreensis sp. nov. is described based on nine specimens collected from two intertidal sites in the Korean coast of the Yellow Sea, including the same site as the habitat of H. hwanghaiensis. Hesperonoe japonensis sp. nov. is described by re-examination of many specimens collected from eight intertidal sites and a subtidal one in Japan, which was previously misidentified as H. hwanghaiensis. The three species are clearly distinguishable from one another by the species-specific morphology of the macrotubercles (or marked ridges) on the surface of elytra. All of the three species seemed to be commensal with the burrowing mud shrimp Upogebia major in intertidal flats, except for an additional probable host of another upogebid shrimp Austinogebia narutensis for H. japonensis sp. nov. in a subtidal habitat. The morphological characteristics and host species of the three Asian species are compared with all of the other five congeners known from the North American Pacific and Arctic Sea.

Identification of Tim4 as a phosphatidylserine receptor

In programmed cell death, a large number of cells undergo apoptosis, and are engulfed by macrophages to avoid the release of noxious materials from the dying cells. In definitive erythropoiesis, nuclei are expelled from erythroid precursor cells and are engulfed by macrophages. Phosphatidylserine is exposed on the surface of apoptotic cells and on the nuclei expelled from erythroid precursor cells; it works as an 'eat me' signal for phagocytes. Phosphatidylserine is also expressed on the surface of exosomes involved in intercellular signalling. Here we established a library of hamster monoclonal antibodies against mouse peritoneal macrophages, and found an antibody that strongly inhibited the phosphatidylserine-dependent engulfment of apoptotic cells. The antigen recognized by the antibody was identified by expression cloning as a type I transmembrane protein called Tim4 (T-cell immunoglobulin- and mucin-domain-containing molecule; also known as Timd4). Tim4 was expressed in Mac1+ cells in various mouse tissues, including spleen, lymph nodes and fetal liver. Tim4 bound apoptotic cells by recognizing phosphatidylserine via its immunoglobulin domain. The expression of Tim4 in fibroblasts enhanced their ability to engulf apoptotic cells. When the anti-Tim4 monoclonal antibody was administered into mice, the engulfment of apoptotic cells by thymic macrophages was significantly blocked, and the mice developed autoantibodies. Among the other Tim family members, Tim1, but neither Tim2 nor Tim3, specifically bound phosphatidylserine. Tim1- or Tim4-expressing Ba/F3 B cells were bound by exosomes via phosphatidylserine, and exosomes stimulated the interaction between Tim1 and Tim4. These results indicate that Tim4 and Tim1 are phosphatidylserine receptors for the engulfment of apoptotic cells, and may also be involved in intercellular signalling in which exosomes are involved.     

Smart Processing in Materials Tectonics: Fabrication of Photonic Crystals for Terahertz Wave Control by Using Micro-Stereolithography

Photonic crystals with three-dimensional dielectric structures were fabricated to control terahertz waves effectively by using micro-stereolithography of a CAD/CAM process. The photonic crystals with a diamond structure composed of acrylic lattice with nanosized alumina particles were fabricated. Dense alumina structures were obtained by successive dewaxing and sintering in an air atmosphere. The electromagnetic wave properties of these samples were measured by using a terahertz spectroscopy device. The micro periodic structures exhibited perfect band gaps in the terahertz range. To control terahertz waves, micrometer sized electromagnetic devices for cavities, filters, and antennas will be necessary.     

Uptake of fat by fluorescent granular perithelial cells in cerebral cortex after administration of fat rich chow

Summary As reported previously, fluorescent granular perithelial cells (F.G.P.) are distributed along small blood vessels, possibly postcapillary venous vessels, in the cerebral cortex; these cells take up intraventricularly administered horseradish peroxidase efficiently. In this study it is shown that lipid substances of the blood are easily incorporated into F.G.P. and stored in their cytoplasm. The quantity of fat deposits in F.G.P. varies with the age of the animal and is very marked in old rats. The administration of elastase suppresses the fat uptake and/or facilitates the fat metabolism in F.G.P.Acknowledgment. Effect of oridonin, a Rabdosia diterpenoid, on radiosensitization with misonidazole

The radiosensitization brought about by oridonin, one of the Rabdosia diterpenoids, alone or in combination with misonidazole, was investigated in Chinese hamster V79 cells. The enhancement ratio of 1.92 was obtained when 0.01 mM oridonin and 1 mM misonidazole were administered to hypoxic cells under radiation. The enhancement ratios of oridonin and misonidazole for hypoxic cells were 1.16 and 1.59 respectively. Hence, a supra-additive effect was obtained by the combined treatment with these two drugs. Under aerobic conditions, no effect of 0.01 mM oridonin on the radiosensitization caused by misonidazole was observed.     

Genome sequencing and analysis of Aspergillus oryzae

The genome of Aspergillus oryzae, a fungus important for the production of traditional fermented foods and beverages in Japan, has been sequenced. The ability to secrete large amounts of proteins and the development of a transformation system have facilitated the use of A. oryzae in modern biotechnology. Although both A. oryzae and Aspergillus flavus belong to the section Flavi of the subgenus Circumdati of Aspergillus, A. oryzae, unlike A. flavus, does not produce aflatoxin, and its long history of use in the food industry has proved its safety. Here we show that the 37-megabase (Mb) genome of A. oryzae contains 12,074 genes and is expanded by 7-9 Mb in comparison with the genomes of Aspergillus nidulans and Aspergillus fumigatus. Comparison of the three aspergilli species revealed the presence of syntenic blocks and A. oryzae-specific blocks (lacking synteny with A. nidulans and A. fumigatus) in a mosaic manner throughout the genome of A. oryzae. The blocks of A. oryzae-specific sequence are enriched for genes involved in metabolism, particularly those for the synthesis of secondary metabolites. Specific expansion of genes for secretory hydrolytic enzymes, amino acid metabolism and amino acid/sugar uptake transporters supports the idea that A. oryzae is an ideal microorganism for fermentation.     

Comparison of Β-Adrenergic blocking activity of dichloroisoprenaline (H 56/28, I.C.I. 50172, LB46), methoxamine (MJ 1999) and propranolol in the canine femoral vascular bed

Zusammenfassung Die blockierende Wirkung intra- arteriell verabreichter,-adrenergischer Mittel wurde am femoralen Gefässgebiet des Hundes untersucht. DCI, H 56/28 und LB 46 per se regten den arteriellen Blutstrom mit zunehmender Dosierung an, während Methoxamin in umgekehrter Weise wirkte. Eine hemmende Wirkung auf den durch Isoprenalin angeregten Blutstrom fand sich in folgender Reihenfolge: LB 46H 56/28 > Propranolol > MJ 1999=DCI. I.C.I. 50172 und Methoxamin fehlt diese Wirkung.
